Default Unofficial best of the month

Since I did this this morning, and since I did it by hand, it's decidedly not official. But as of then and as near as I can tell, here are the best single 5x5 games of the month:

Total words for a single game:
1. Fasteddieb: 245
2. Thunderrock: 230
3. Estivate: 212
4. Erakis17: 193
5. Eponine: 192
6. RussDNails: 186
7. Nafets: 185
8. Boggleholic: 175
9. Knishes9: 163
10: Dontpostponejoy: 162

Highest score for a single game:
1. Fasteddieb: 1369
2. Thunderrock: 1196
3. Estivate: 1127
4. Erakis17: 1081
5. Nafets: 1061
6. RussDNails: 1054
7. Boggleholic: 1036
8. Eponine: 989
9. Wordhouston: 878
10. Baronette: 877

I found 180 words and scored a 963 in a game. Not my career bests, but good enough for 8th and 9th on these lists I think.

Cool!

Of course, if you could isolate multiple games from a single player, the list might be all fasteddieb and Thunderrock. That said, I don't mind sneaking in

You're correct. I put the lists together by looking at the published highest average scores per game and then looking at each player individually for their stats. If you hadn't yet played 51 games when I looked, I wouldn't have seen your numbers. And then, of course, there's always human error. I wouldn't be surprised to find I'd left someone out or mistranscribed something.

This was a nice idea, bwt. Are there other unofficial monthly stats people would be interested in seeing? I already figured out how to parse the pages here, so without much trouble I could write a script to compile statistics from the current high score lists. I think the 'best word' list has the most complete set of active players (as it doesn't require 50 games). But I could put in a minimum game requirement, whatever seems useful.

Aside from 'best individual game', other thoughts I had were:
- list of people who beat or tied their 'personal best' game (# words / score / best word) this month
- fixed 'best average' (allowing >1000 pts/game for the, uh, three players I can think of for whom this matters). Obviously I would screen the stats for cheaters.
- % games played resulting in a record for various categories (this would have to be a 'lifetime' stat)

Any others?

If you could run a script to reproduce my results, please do -- and let me know, so I won't have to do the work manually. I am willing to do it, though; this is not a demand for you.

Sure! We might as well let the robot go do all that clicking.

I finished up the script and tested it, but I'll wait until tomorrow to run it for real, in deference to any end-of-the-month scramblers. There are other reports I could generate, but it scrapes enough data (313 players on testing) to make big lists for the three items I suggested (both 4x4 and 5x5). Still open to suggestions for anything else.

(spoilers: the usual suspects had some great games, and a whole group of people are putting up personal bests)

One more thing that might be interesting: compile a list of all-time high games (cheaters excluded). I have found that comparing high scores lets me gauge how good a player is, where average score often does not. If a player is more or less selective about what kinds of games to play, that will distort the average.

The site already has that feature (all-time highs), though it's not obvious:
http://www.wordtwist.org/halloffame5.php?o=3

You can get there by clicking on the appropriate column to sort. Now, obviously there are a whole lot of cheaters on that list, as well as unreasonable scores from players I've never thought cheated (so maybe they ran a program once on a whim I don't really care as long as they Don't Do It Again). But the whole job then is to filter out cheaters, and I don't think I could write an algorithm that was better at that than just using your own judgment.

[Edit]: Actually, there is a reason to do this. First, my script is only looking at currently active players, which is more interesting for your purpose, and cuts out a lot of cheaters from years ago. And lots of active players don't make that top-250 all-time list. I'll see about adding that.
