And I was wondering about 'bests" - as in "She bests the dragon" sort of bests??

I played 'bests' in a game today, if that's any help to you. I don't know about 'mountie' though.

I was sure, but now I'm totally doubting myself. Haven't been able to get a board where it's a possibility to check yet. I'm almost positive I did as I had read this thread before playing it and that's why it stuck in my mind.

1. mountie is not acceptable.
2. bests is acceptable. when you're typing fast, you tend to misspell things.

Sorry, my mistake, not bests but bested - as in "She bested the dragon" - would this not be a legitimate word in this sense? This is definitely listed as invalid.
