Default Boards that are too full to be good

When searching for "good" boards, has anyone else found that boards with a ridiculous amount of available words are often tougher to play than just slightly-better-than-average boards?
Like I just found a 4x4 that had more than 500 possible words... Of which I managed to find just 87. The game I played immediately afterwards had just under 300 available words, and I found 95.
Is that just me, or is that something that happens to other people as well? Can so many possible combinations be distracting rather than helpful?

I have the same problem. Now, I don't play any boards that have more than 500 possible words (I play only 5x5). I find my highest scores are on boards with 350-400 words.

For the same reason, I play only 4x4. I feel overwhelmed and disorganized by the possibilities in a 5x5 board.

Same thing here, When I play a board with 500 or more possible words I often find myself losing track of what words I'm working on as I see another good or better combination nearby. Then, when I jump to that combo the same thing will happen. In the end I almost always find my score disappointing, at least compared to what I had hoped!
