Default Queued up gaming timing out

A day or two ago I was clicking through games (I'm pretty picky and only play boards that I think I can score well on) and found a nice tasty one - something like 200 common words. I got called away, so left my browser on that WordTwist page so I could return to it later.

When I came back again (maybe 6 hours later?) it would not let me play that board. I forget what the message was, but basically, the board was gone.

Does this always happen to boards that are queued up for too long? Or is it possible that, in the time between when I found the board and when I returned, it was permanently retired for some reason?

I've read speculation that boards are retired when all the words are found, but surely that would be a rare occurrence, especially for ones with hundreds of rare and extremely rare words like the one I had queued.

Or - another theory - maybe the board reached 50 plays and was cleared while I was out, thus invalidating my page?
